How agents run a strategy

What tango.finance's agents do for a running strategy, how programs, rules and Autopilot decide, what the agents' account can sign, and how you turn them off.

Once a strategy is set up, agents run it. They buy on its schedule, open and close perps on its conditions, park idle cash in money markets and move cash between the vault and its accounts. They act only within the strategy you reviewed and the limits its vault was deployed with, and you can turn them off at any time. This page explains what each kind of agent does, what it can sign, and what stays in your hands.

Key points

  • Programs buy on a schedule and rules act when a price moves. Both are code: no AI model decides anything once the strategy is running.
  • Autopilot is an AI model that reviews the strategy on an interval and makes moves that need judgement.
  • Agents act through their own account, which holds the vault's Settler, Allocator and Trader roles. They never sign with your wallet and can't send cash to anyone.
  • Agentic Rebalancing in Settings turns every agent decision off. Close and Withdraw still work.

Kinds of agents

A strategy runs one of four ways, set by your prompt and shown in What It Does on Review.

KindDecides withWhen it acts
HoldCodeWhen cash arrives: it parks idle cash in money markets
ProgramCodeOn its schedule: every hour, four hours, day or week
RuleCodeWhen its price condition is met
AutopilotAn AI modelOn its review interval

Any of them can keep idle cash in the strategy's money markets. Cash in this sense is the strategy's idle USDC plus what sits in its money markets, so a share of cash counts both.

Programs

A program buys on a schedule. Each period, it spends its Size, a share of the strategy's cash, across its assets by their weights. It calls no AI model, so a buy happens every period without anyone deciding to make it.

  • Each buy is quoted when it is sent, and each swap must stay within the program's slippage tolerance against oracle prices. A swap that would lose more is tried again later in the same period, then skipped.
  • A buy that doesn't happen in its period is never doubled up in the next.
  • A buy smaller than the smallest order the app sends is skipped.
  • If one asset's route is refused, that asset waits and the others still buy.
  • A stock buy waits for the next US market session within its period. On weekends and holidays, a strategy that holds stocks rests entirely. See Tokenized stocks.

What a program buys, it holds. It sells only when you close a position.

Rules

A rule trades one perp market on Hyperliquid when a price moves. It holds:

  • a market and a side, Long or Short;
  • a trigger: which way the price moves, by how much, and within how many hours, measured from that window's high or low;
  • the leverage and the size, a share of the strategy's cash used as margin;
  • an optional stop loss and take profit, as a distance from the entry price.

Tango adds the rest, the same for every rule: how far an entry may slip, a buffer from liquidation, one position at a time, a wait before the rule can fire again, daily limits on entries and costs, and an end date.

When the condition is met, the rule opens with an order that never fills past its entry price. Once it fills, the stop loss and take profit are placed from the actual entry. After the position closes, the rule fires again only on a new move.

A rule's margin comes from what is already on Hyperliquid first, then the strategy's idle cash, then its money markets. Between trades, the margin either stays on Hyperliquid or comes back to cash, depending on what your prompt asked. Review says which: "Keeps its margin on Hyperliquid between trades." or "Brings its margin back to cash after each trade." Moving cash to and from Hyperliquid has costs and minimums, so a return too small to be worth sending stays on Hyperliquid as the rule's own cash. See Perps on Hyperliquid.

Autopilot

Autopilot is an AI model that reviews the strategy on an interval, Review Every on Review, and follows your Instructions. It can buy and sell the strategy's assets, move cash in and out of its money markets, and trade its perp markets. It works within every limit on the strategy:

  • Every perp it opens carries a resting stop that Tango prices. The model can only tighten it, and an order with no stop is not sent.
  • On a market a rule trades, it may only reduce.
  • It skips a strategy too small to be worth a review.

Rules and Autopilot are offered once Tango turns them on. Until then, a prompt that needs one is answered as not available yet.

What agents can sign

Agents work through your agents' account, an account of yours made for the strategy. During setup, Authorize Agents lets Tango's execution service sign for it, under a policy that limits it to this strategy's vault. Its multicall holds three of the vault's roles:

RoleLets agents
SettlerSettle deposit and withdrawal requests
AllocatorSend the vault's idle cash into the strategy's accounts, within each account's cap and rate limit
TraderSwap and use money markets in the Strategy account, make the approved bridge transfer from the Perps account, and bring either account's cash back to the vault

On a strategy with perps, agents also trade on Hyperliquid through an agent wallet Tango holds, within your strategy's markets and Max Leverage. See Hyperliquid trading wallets.

Agents cannot:

  • sign with your Tango wallet, or move cash out of it;
  • send cash anywhere but the vault, its accounts and the venues it was set up with;
  • add an asset, a money market or a perp market;
  • raise a rate limit, grant a role or change a timelock;
  • settle anyone's withdrawal to an address other than the request's owner.

Each swap is checked by the vault against oracle prices, and rate limits slow how fast cash moves. See Roles and profiles.

Settings

The Settings tab on a strategy's page holds what you can change about how agents run it.

SettingWhat it does
Agentic RebalancingTurns every agent decision on or off
Max LeverageThe highest leverage for each perp market, with its open position
RulesThe same fields as What It Does on Review, with Save Changes
ChangesEvery change, with its Time, Change, From and To, in UTC
Close StrategyEnds a strategy that holds nothing

Agentic Rebalancing

Turning Agentic Rebalancing off stops every agent decision in one step. Programs and Autopilot stop, rules stop watching their conditions, including exits a rule would take, and agents stop moving cash to and from Hyperliquid. What is already happening finishes safely:

  • orders resting on Hyperliquid, such as a stop loss or take profit, stay there;
  • steps already sent finish and are checked;
  • Close and Withdraw still work, because they run on the approval you gave at setup.

The strategy shows Agents Off beside its name. Turning it back on is up to you, and it never turns on by itself. When it does, a rule waits for a new price move before it acts.

Closing a position while agents are on turns Agentic Rebalancing off for that strategy, so agents don't reopen what you just closed. The Close dialog says so.

Max Leverage

Each perp market has a Max Leverage, chosen on Review and changed here. Every order follows it, whoever places it.

  • Raising it is checked against the lower of Tango's ceiling for the market and Hyperliquid's live maximum. If Hyperliquid can't be read, the raise is refused.
  • Lowering it always saves. An open position above the new limit stays open and shows Over Limit, with Reduce. New risk on that market is refused, and resting orders that would add to it are cancelled. Nothing is forced to reduce.

Rules

You can change a running strategy's schedule, size, condition, leverage, stop loss and take profit here, then Save Changes. If a rule has a position open, the change waits until that position closes: "Waiting for the open position to finish."

Close Strategy

Once a strategy holds nothing, Close Strategy ends it for good. Its agents turn off, and the app no longer offers deposits.

Agents and Activity

Everything agents do appears in Activity, with its steps: each buy, sale, money market move, bridge transfer and settlement. A trade an agent started can't be stopped from Activity. Turn Agentic Rebalancing off instead. See Positions, Close and Activity.
